On March 15th, 2019, “Five Feet Apart” premiered in theaters in the United States. The film stars actor, Cole Sprouse and actress, Haley Lu Richardson. The story follows Stella Grant as she spends most of her time in her hospital room, as a cystic fibrosis patient. Her days are repetitive, followed by routines. The audience soon finds out she is a rule follower and a control freak. Stella follows her treatment regimen and always takes her medicine on time, all while hoping for a lung transplant. The transplant may only work for five years but it is her best case scenario. She maintains a youtube channel with thousands of followers that follow her journey as a cystic fibrosis patient. Stella soon meets another patient with the same illness, named Will Newman. They instantly click and are flirtatious with each other. The two patients are restricted to stand six feet apart from each other, they never are allowed to touch and they must wear masks. As their relationship escalates they are tempted to break the rules even though it is extremely dangerous for their health. As time goes on, Stella keeps falling for Will and she says, “After all CF has taken from me, I don’t mind stealing one foot back”. This is how the movie got its title.

The PG-13 film was directed by Justin Baldoni with a production budget of $7 million. As of April 2, according to the box office the motion picture has grossed a total of $52 million worldwide. It scored 80% on rotten tomatoes many critics loved this emotional rollercoaster of a movie. Paul Byrnes, writer for Sydney Morning Herald stated, “It’s the best tear-jerker in a long time; one box of tissues might not be enough. On a deeper level, it earns some of that emotion through a story based on a real dilemma.” Another writer gave credit to the leads of the movie stating, “Offers a solid showcase for its young leads, Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse, while laboring to flesh out a complete movie”(Brian Lowry, CNN.com).

The tear jerking film will leave the audience in awe. It is a heartbreaking movie that will always keep you laughing, crying, and smiling.
