On Nov. 9th, 2018, Dr. Seuss’ “The Grinch” premiered in theaters around the world. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch, and Pharrell Williams as the narrator. This film is a modern version of a retelling tale of a Grinch and his faithful dog Max, they live as outcasts inside a cave on Mount Crumpet. The Grinch is extremely miserable but his main irritation comes from the Whos’ in Whoville who celebrate and obsess over Christmas. The Grinch soon has his heart changed by a little girls holiday spirit. This year the Whos’ decide to make Christmas brighter and bigger than ever before. The Grinch acknowledges this and realized that he needs to take matter into his own hands to get the peace and quiet he thinks he needs. Then, with his dog max they plan to impersonate Santa Claus thus ruining Christmas, ending the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all. Meanwhile Cindy-Lou’s goal is to meet Santa Claus and she will stop at nothing to speak with him. Her and her friends plan to trap Santa but as Christmas approaches Cindy-Lou’s warm hearted plan jeopardizes the Grinch’s scheme. In this film the Grinch learns to have a heart and join in on the holiday cheer.

This motion picture film has received multiple reviews, and received a 58% on rotten tomatoes. The new Grinch has mixed reviews because some people believe it will never top the original. Adam Graham, writer for Detroit News stated, “The Grinch is a respectable, if safe, retelling of Dr. Seuss’ holiday classic.” Nell Minow, writer for RogerEbert.com wrote “It does not surpass the Chuck Jones version (or having the book read aloud by a parent, which is still ideal) but it is far more superior to the Carrey film and should become a welcome family tradition.” Most critics say that the original will always be unsurpassed but agree that the 2018 film will be better than the Jim Carrey film of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” The film had the biggest opening weekend for a Christmas movie.
