On September 14th, 2018 the mystery thriller, “A Simple Favor,” was released in theaters. The film stars beloved actresses Blake Lively as Emily, and Anna Kendrick as Stephanie. Another notable performance is that of Henry Golding, who you may have seen in the recent film, “Crazy Rich Asians,” earlier this year. The screen production is based off a novel of the same name, written by Darcy Bell which was published only one year ago. The story follows Stephanie Smothers, a single mother whose life revolves around making popular ‘mommy vlogs’ for Youtube. Through her son’s school, she befriends fellow mother Emily, an elegant yet mysterious woman, whose high profile fashion job steals her attention from her son. After the two very opposite women become best friends, Emily asks Stephanie for a simple favor, to pick up her son from school as she is caught at work and her husband is out of town. Although, Emily never comes to pick up her son, and the next day she is deemed missing.

The rated R movie was directed by Paul Feig with a budget of  $20 million, while making $62.9 million back at the box office. The characters’ lives are set in a small town just outside of New York City, yet the filming process took place in Ontario and Toronto, Canada. The public media has given an average rating of 7/10, and the film also has a score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The prominent actresses of the film also had a large hand in promotion for their new project. On the first of May, Blake Lively deleted all pictures from her Instagram, posting a game of hangman spelling out “What happened to Emily?” Lively and Kendrick have both been very vocal on their pride of being a part of a film with two principal women, whose story does not revolve around a man. The production is also receiving buzz for beating Hollywood stereotypes with a mixed racial couple, with Henry Golding’s character being married to the character of Emily.

This suspenseful film is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat with its mysterious mannerisms. If you enjoy watching and solving mysteries, you will love this baffling movie. Grab a friend, go and try to find out what just happened to Emily.
